Punta Gorda

The City of Punta Gorda is a vibrant, waterfront community, unique in character and history. With a population of 17,566, this growing community has much to offer. Nestled along the banks of Charlotte Harbor, this waterfront community offers residents a small town experience with the amenities of fishing, biking, kayaking, boating, and much more. The City was voted #15 for best yachting community and recently opened 18 miles of bicycle and pedestrian trails that will take you around the City waterfront and downtown districts. One of the most unique characteristics about Punta Gorda is its seawalls and waterfront living. Punta Gorda has 18 miles of seawall managed and maintained by the City. The City Historical District also serves for avid walkers and bicyclist. You can walk your neighborhood and meet up in Downtown Punta Gorda for a light lunch at one our many locally owned and operated restaurant. Punta Gorda is also home to Fishermen’s Village, home to 71 local merchants, restaurants, and boating services.

Preserving Punta Gorda’s rich history is a top priority for its citizens. Its roots trace back to the landing of Ponce de Leon and DeSoto County in the early 1500s. “Punta Gorda” in Spanish means “fat point,” referencing the City’s land jutting into Charlotte Harbor. The National Register Historic District Overlay District was established to help protect historic structures and promote public awareness. You will find history all over Punta Gorda, especially through the efforts of the Mural Society, which painted and erected beautiful historical murals placed throughout the City. Whether you visit us for a weekend or stay for a lifetime, Punta Gorda is where it’s happening.
